First attested as sueninghe in the 13th century. Derived from Old Frisian Sween (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi-. The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name. Compare Zwijnsbergen.
