From Proto-Turkic *āg- (to rise up), cognate with Azerbaijani ağmaq (to outweigh; to rise up), Gagauz aamaa (to vaporize), Turkmen āgmak (to overflow), Kazakh ауу (auu), Karakhanid [script needed] (ağmaq, to rise up, climb), etc. Relation with ağır is disputable. (Turkmen agyr, Yakut ыар (ıar), Khalaj aɣị̄r)
