Derived from Latin affectus, the participle stem of afficere (to act upon, influence, affect, attack with disease), from ad- + facere (to make, do).

  1. (transitive) to affect, put on; feign, pretend
    Lia ŝajna simpatio estas afektita.
    What appears to be friendliness on his part is a pretense.
  2. (intransitive) to put on airs.
    Ĉesu afekti, vi ne estas pli bona ol ni.
    Stop putting on airs; you are no better than we are.
