Etymology edit

From Proto-Tocharian *ekäñye-, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵ- (to drive, herd). The semantic derivation of ownership of livestock into material wealth is a commong feature in Indo-European languages, seen also in English fee and chattel, and Latin pecunia. Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀγέλη (agélē), Latin agō. Compare Tocharian B ekaññe.
