Etymology edit
alue (“region”) + hallinto (“administration”) + virasto (“office, authority”), coined in 2009 when the reorganization of state regional administration was planned. Aluehallintovirasto replaced the former lääninhallitus, and lääni was discontinued as administrative unit from the beginning of 2010.
