editAlternative forms
editThe possible combinations are made: with or without "pointed vowels", with or without a connecting -o- between amisk and wâciy, with or without a space or dash between wâciy and wâskahikan, and with or without the final -ihk.
Etymology
editFrom amiskwâciy (“Beaver Hills”) + wâskahikanihk (“at the house [fur trade post]”) or "at the Beaver Hills House", in turn from amisk (“beaver”) + wâciy (“hill”) and wâskahikan (“house”) + -ihk (“at”). The Cree term wâskahikanihk (“at the house”) was also used in other regions as the names for Grouard, Alberta and Cumberland House, Saskatchewan. Compare Ojibwe waakaa'igan (“house, building”).
