Ultimately from Old Galician-Portuguese algũa cousa (“something, anything”), likely via an earlier form of Portuguese alguma coisa, possibly algũa cousa reduced via [alguŋa kuza] → [a uŋa kuza] → [aŋkuza].[1] Semantically, displaced cuza as a noun. Compare Galician algunha cousa.
