From French postille (marginal note), from Latin post illa (verba) (after those (words))

apostil (plural apostils)

  1. A marginal note; a gloss.
  2. A method of verification for international documents.
The deponent's signature was verified in accordance with the apostil to the Hague convention.
Apostil is drawn on the document itself or on a separate sheet attached to the document; it should comply with the specimen attached to the Convention. Apostil may be drawn up in the official language of the issuing authority, and its provisions may be set forth in another language as well. The title “Apostille (Convention de la Haye du 5 octobre 1961)” may be given only in French. [1]
