Etymology edit
From Old Norse bófi (“boy”), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *bō- (“close [male] relation”). Cognate with Dutch boef (“mischievous boy, rascal; also thief”), Middle Low German bōve, German Bube (“boy, rascal, knave, rogue”), dialectal Swedish babbe (“little boy”) and English bub.
