From Proto-Philippine *bal(ə)ñáw (to rinse; to rinse off) with metathesis, from Proto-Austronesian *bañaw (to wash the body). Compare Bikol Central balnaw, Cebuano banaw (to overflow), Ibatan vanaw (to wash the hands), Ivatan vanaw (to wash the hands), Kavalan banaw (to wash one's hands or feet).
