Berse = berze, with s due to German orthography. From Proto-Balto-Slavic *berźas, *berźā, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerHǵós. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *berza, Latvian bȩ̃rzs, bẽrze and Lithuanian béržas.
