From Proto-Balto-Slavic *p(e)sdeˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *pesd-. Cognate with Latvian bezdêt (to break wind), Proto-Slavic *pьzděti (to break wind), Ancient Greek βδέω (bdéō, to break wind), Latin pēdo (to break wind).
