Etymology edit
The noun boltcovitka (“Auricularia”) is the genus of the fungus and is derived from boltec (“auricle”). It refers to the shape of its fruiting body, as does the following noun ucho (“ear”). The possessive adjective Jidášovo (“Judas', belonging to Judas”) refers to a legend saying that Judas Iscariot hanged himself on a black elder tree, on which this fungus commonly grows.
