champas (uncountable)

  1. The native peat of Peru.
    • 1828, John Miller, Memoirs of General Miller: In the Service of the Republic of Peru, volume 2, page 117:
Champas, or peat, was cut as a substitute; but instead of being piled up in stacks, it was scattered over the country to dry, so that if the royalists attempted to burn it, the destruction would be a work of time, and of difficulty.
