Etymology

edit

Related words appear in all Balkan languages. Probably from Ancient Greek καλύβη (kalúbē), possibly through a Slavic language intermediary (Serbian, Bulgarian колиба (koliba)), compare also Albanian koljubë, and Turkish borrowing kulübe. Relation to Persian کلبه (kolbe) unclear. Another somewhat less likely theory suggests the other Balkan language cognates may have originally come from an old Romanian word and that it may be derived from Latin collegia, from collegium. For the uncommon sound shift from g > b, see limbă, barză, întreba, etc.[1]
