Ultimately from Latin cubitum (elbow) through Old Portuguese [Term?], either from Latin cubitālis (via Mozarabic qubtal)[1] or alternatively from Latin cubitellum[2]. Cognate with Galician cotobelo. Cf. also the related coto and côvado.
