Borrowed from Ancient Greek κοκκύμηλον (kokkúmēlon), from κόκκῠξ (kókkux, cuckoo) +‎ μῆλον (mêlon, apple, any fruit from a tree). The ending in -i could be a consequence of contamination with meli (honey).
