Precise development uncertain, but possibly from Proto-Germanic *kiukīną. Compare Low German kiken, Middle Dutch kieken, Middle High German kūchelīn (German Küchlein). Alternatively, equivalent to cocc + -en (see ċicen. Lack of palatalization of the second c is unexpected.
