From Middle Welsh kyfreieu (leashes), from Proto-Brythonic *kuβ̃ruɨɣ (compare Breton kevre (link), Cornish kevren (bond, link)), from Proto-Celtic *komrigā (bond, binding), prefixed deverbative of *rig- (to bind) (compare Old Irish con·rig), from Proto-Indo-European *Hreyǵ- (stretch tight, bind).
