dead plate (plural dead plates)

  1. (engineering) A solid covering over a part of a fire grate, to prevent the entrance of air through that part.
  2. (engineering) A fixed solid piece between two moving conveyors, to span the gap created by the roll over ends of the conveyors, allowing for the smooth transfer of products from one conveyor to another.
