From Old French gai (happy; cheerful; gay), from Old Occitan gai (happy; joyous), from Gothic *𐌲𐌰𐌷𐌴𐌹𐍃 (*gaheis, impetuous) or from Frankish *gāhi (fast, sudden, impetuous), *wāhi (pretty) or from Latin vagus (wandering, inconstant, flighty).
