Inherited from Sanskrit धन (dhana), from धन् (dhan) + -अ (-a). Note the semantic change from "prize" to "herd" in other Indo-Aryan cognates; the development to "goat" in Phalura is exceptional, but compare Shina [script needed] (don, “herd of goats”), Bhalesi Bhadrawahi धण (dhaṇ, “flock of goats and sheep”).
