Borrowed from Medieval Latin dūra māter [​cerebrī​] (literally hard mother [of the brain]), loan translation of Arabic أُمّ الدِّمَاغ الصَفِيقَة (ʔumm ad-dimāḡ aṣ-ṣafīqa, literally thick mother of the brain, matrix of the brain).
