From dyb (deep) +‎ -de. It seems to be a new formation from ca. 1700 rather than an inherited word from Old Norse dýpt, Proto-Germanic *diupiþō, cognate with English depth, Dutch diepte, and Gothic 𐌳𐌹𐌿𐍀𐌹𐌸𐌰 (diupiþa).
