From Proto-Aslian *ʔəmpuaʔ (“to dream”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *mp(ɔ)ʔ (“dream; to dream”). Cognate with Koho mpao, Ong mpɔ̰ɔ, Bolyu paːu¹³, Central Nicobarese enfūa, Old Mon ampo whence Mon လ္ပံ.
