From Proto-Aslian *ʔəmpuaʔ (to dream), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *mp(ɔ)ʔ (dream; to dream). Cognate with Koho mpao, Ong mpɔ̰ɔ, Bolyu paːu¹³, Central Nicobarese enfūa, Old Mon ampo whence Mon လ္ပံ.
