From Old Spanish espejo, older spillu (although this form may have been from a Navarro-Aragonese dialect), from Vulgar Latin speclum (or perhaps a variant form *spiclum), syncopated form of Latin speculum[1]. Compare the borrowed doublet espéculo. Cognate with English speculum.
