Etymology

Borrowed from Greek γύφτος (gýftos, Gipsy), with regressive metathesis of the f, from Ancient Greek Αἰγύπτιος (Aigúptios, Egyptian). For the apparent, and possibly concidental, retention of the initial /e/ compare Aromanian gheghiftu.
