Etymology edit

Borrowed from English phone.

Pronunciation edit

Noun edit

fòn m or f (genitive singular fòn, plural fònaichean)

  1. telephone

Usage notes edit

  • This recently borrowed word has not fully been integrated into Scottish Gaelic grammar. Thus, in the dative case, air a' fòn (on the phone) is usually heard, rather than the grammatically expected air an fhòn.

Derived terms edit

Verb edit

fòn (past dh'fhòn, future fònaidh, verbal noun fònadh, past participle fònte)

  1. telephone
