Etymology edit

Back-formation of earlier *gjamët(ë), Buzuku gjamënë, (originally a neuter noun but interpreted as feminine plural), through Vulgar Latin from Latin gemitum (groan, lamentation).[1] Compare Romanian geamăt.

Alternatively a deverbative of gjëmoj.[2]
