groundworker (plural groundworkers)

  1. A person who works on the ground, as opposed to an aviator, etc.
  2. Somebody employed to dig trenches, foundations, etc. in the ground.

      At this stage of the construction process the only people on the site would normally be groundworkers and the steel erectors, followed by the roof cladders.
