Inherited from Latin gypsum. First attested in 1309. Cognates include Italian gesso and Spanish yeso.

guix m (plural guixos)

1. gypsum (a mineral consisting of hydrated calcium sulphate)
2. plaster (a mixture of lime or gypsum, sand, and water, sometimes with the addition of fibres, that hardens to a smooth solid and is used for coating walls and ceilings)
3. cast (an object made in a mould)
4. (medicine) cast (a supportive and immobilising device used to help mend broken bones)
