Etymology

edit

Akin to Greek γούβα (goúva), γκούβα (gkoúva, small pit; depression), Aromanian guvã (hole, cavity), regional Romanian guvă (nostril). Other languages may have borrowed the word from Albanian where, given the variant guvër, it is most likely a variant of gavër (hollow in a tree trunk; hole, cavity).
