editFrom Old Cornish guid, from Proto-Celtic *wēt(t)ā (“swamp, stream”), probably from Proto-Indo-European *weyh₁- (“to wither”), see also Latin viēscō (“wither”), Lithuanian výsti (“wither”), Old High German wesanēn (“wither, wilt”) and Old Norse visna.[1]
