From Old Norse hæð, influenced by the East Norse-derived høg (“high, tall”). Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *hauhiþō. Doublet of hæd, hædd, and hø. Compare Swedish höjd, Danish højde (> Norwegian Bokmål høyde), Dutch hoogte, Old High German hohida, Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌿𐌷𐌹𐌸𐌰 (hauhiþa), and English height.
