  1. (biochemistry) A brownish pigment found in blood; The heme portion of hemoglobin.
    • 1853 July, Alexander King, “Article I. Case of Chloroma”, in The Monthly journal of medical science, volume 8, number 43, page 103:
      Vogel says, "The yellowish-green tint of the serum may be dependant on the brown colouring matter of healthy blood, which was first described by Simon, and received the name of Haemaphaein from that chemist. Nitric acid will serve to prevent its being mistaken for bile pigment.
