      A plausible explanation is that infection with some haemosporidian species is known to have no or only a slightly negative effect on the fitness of their bird host (e.g. Haemoproteus parabelopolskyi in blackcaps [47 ] and some Plasmodium genetic lineages in great reed warblers (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) [48 ]).
