From Middle High German anebōz, from Old High German anabōz, from ana (“on”) + bōzan (“to beat”) (from Proto-Germanic *bautaną (“to beat”)). Cognate with German Amboss. Source of h- epenthesis unclear. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
