editFrom Proto-Brythonic *hoiniβ̃, from Proto-Celtic *sognīm-, from *su- (“good”) and *gnīmus (“doing, deed”). Compare Irish soghníomh (“good deed”) and Welsh gweini, which combines the same root with a different prefix.
