Etymology
editPerhaps an extended form of Arabic هَوَّدَ (hawwada), which originally means “to make or be gentle, slow, languid” and thence “to murmur, make demonic insinuations” as well as “to make drunk and sleepy”. The Maltese verb apparently has an archaic sense “to go mad, rave”, which can be derived from this as well.
