From Proto-Fula-Serer *hwoos, whence also Serer foxos. Possibly from Proto-Atlantic root *kwɔɔʈ, and hence Cognate with Bassari ɛ-kwʌr, Wamey xwər, Badyara kiir, Nalu gbɔrɔ, Mbulungish cì-fó kì. [1]
