Borrowed from Ancient Greek ῡ̔οειδής (hūoeidḗs, shaped like the letter "υ"), from (û) +‎ -ο- (-o-) +‎ -ειδής (-eidḗs, -like, -oid). Doublet of hȳoīdeus.
