Etymology

From Middle Dutch ijsvōgel. Equivalent to ijs (ice) +‎ vogel (bird). There is some dispute about the origin of the name, some relate the first element to ijzer (iron) instead. Compare German Eisvogel, Icelandic ísfugl.
