Etymology

inte (“not”) +‎ sant (“true”). Compare Norwegian Bokmål ikke sant, Danish ikke sandt and Norwegian Nynorsk ikkje sant. Same construction as Russian не правда ли? (ne pravda li?).

Phrase

1. Used to ask for agreement with (or confirmation of) a statement; isn't it?, right?, isn't that so?, etc.

   – I think he committed the murder. – But he was on the other side of the world, right?

   – Du fick svart. – Det passar ju bäst så, inte sant?

Usage notes

Indicates somewhat stronger expectation that the listener will agree compared to eller hur (and so can function as a kind of reminder), though the difference is subtle.
