Inherited from Ottoman Turkish استخفاف (istiḫfāf, “a deeming, judging, pronouncing, calling (a man or a thing) trifling and of little account, treating them as such, despising, contemning, contempt”),[1][2] from Arabic اِسْتِخْفَاف (istiḵfāf), verbal noun of اِسْتَخَفَّ (istaḵaffa, “to belittle, to take lightly, to flout, to make light of”).[3]
