jury mast (plural jury masts)

  1. (nautical) A temporary mast, in place of one that has been carried away or broken.
    • 1787 October 11, Hester Thrale Piozzi, Thraliana:
      [P]erhaps the Jury Masts may just serve to carry me into Harbour, (as they have done,) and then the ship is to sink:—very likely, for such events happen perpetually.
  2. (medicine) An apparatus to support the trunk and head in cases of spinal disease.
