Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *kakteksa toicta kümmentä. Equivalent to kaheksa (eight) +‎ teist (of second). Shortened from kaheksateistkümmend ("eight of the second decade"), which is still evident in declension. Cognate with Finnish kahdeksantoista.
