From Middle English knottil, cnottel ‎(little knot), diminutive of Middle English knotte, cnotte ‎(knot), equivalent to knot +‎ -le. Cognate with Middle Dutch knuttel, Middle Low German knutel, Middle High German Knüttel ‎(little stick). Compare also Old English cnyttels ‎(string, fiber, sinew).
