From Middle English knottil, cnottel(little knot), diminutive of Middle English knotte, cnotte(knot), equivalent to knot +‎ -le. Cognate with Middle Dutch knuttel, Middle Low German knutel, Middle High German Knüttel(little stick). Compare also Old English cnyttels(string, fiber, sinew).
