Possibly from Gothic *𐌻𐌰𐌹𐍄𐍄𐌿𐌲 (*laittug, lead rope), from Proto-Germanic *laidtugą (compare Old English lāttēh (leading rein)), from *laidijaną (to lead) +‎ *tugą (cord, rope). Or perhaps from Basque latigoa.
