Etymology

edit

From Arabic لَقَب (laqab) with irregular -m for -b; possibly by association with unrelated laqqam (to graft), as if the new name were “engrafted” onto the person. Compare Moroccan Arabic لقن (laqqan, to call someone by their last name).
