From Franco-Provençal (Dauphinois) melese (“larch tree”), from Old Occitan *melice, melse, melze, formed from a cross between Gaulish *mel- (“larch”) and Latin larix (“larch”). The Gaulish word is from Proto-Celtic *meli.
